When it comes to getting healthier, most people think that it requires drastic changes.
Perhaps cutting out gluten, eliminating dairy, or going to the gym every single day. However.. in many cases, those actions might not be what you need – the changes you might need may not be so extreme.
In fact, the smallest of changes might just have the biggest impact on your health.
Oftentimes, it’s not until something drastic happens to our own health that we make the changes required to try to repair the damage.
Friends of ours at church are providing support and a place to stay for an elderly couple from out of state. He is battling cancer – he’s is getting weaker by the day and every week when we see him he looks like he is struggling to hold on. His wife is taking great care of him during this time. Several at church mentioned that they would like continued support from the congregation several days a week in the form of meals so as to to help him with proper nutrition.. his wife responded that she has seen a noticeable difference in his mood with a more balanced meal.
I recently read a testimonial from a woman who is part of my Essential Oils group on Facebook -she said that in talking with one of her senior Chiropractic Clients from a few years ago, his wife has dementia and Parkinson’s – he says he will take care of her until he can’t. He has to brush her hair and teeth, cook, feed her….. the list goes on. She has been talking to him about Natural Medicine for his wife years and years ago when she was first diagnosed with Parkinson’s. She suggested to him maybe once or twice that he might want to support her nutrition and wellness care. Just a few months ago, he mentioned that he has noticed that giving her a cup of blueberries every day really makes difference in her mood, behavior, and thinking.
Blueberries are nutrient dense foods – full of antioxidants. They have an ORAC score of 9,621…which is fairly high compared to many other foods out there. They are strong in Vitamin K, Vitamin C, Manganese, Fiber + more. If you aren’t familiar with ORAC scores and how they pertain to your health, this would be a great article to read.
(And while blueberries are often times very cheap at the grocery store, they are one fruit you should always buy organic. Blueberries contain a high level of pesticides- and since their skin is very thin, it’s easy for those chemicals to enter the flesh. Conventional blueberries have up to 52 pesticide chemicals)
It leads you to think long and hard about those two individuals – where would they be now if they had incorporated little changes for better nutrition years ago?
Why are we Afraid of Change?
A good majority of people are afraid of making changes – for some, the changes required might seem pointless.. after all, at some point in our lives we are going to die anyways, so why even bother? Then for others, the commitment to change may be so huge that we just feel an overwhelming move to skip them completely.
I agree, that changes aren’t easy – – but the older you get, the more difficult it becomes to change bad habits. It can be equally hard with multiple children, a demanding job and family expectations. Quite honestly, it’s not about perfection but instead working towards the little things that can help you feel better – both physically and mentally.
Why does It Matter?
Many times we take our health for granted. .. so many people don’t have the ability to have their health. So why do the little things matter? Little things can add up to be some pretty significant things over time.
So why do we say this? To remind you that the little things matter – it’s actually ALL that matters. Big bank accounts, the next best iPhone or flat screen, the biggest car or truck or getting the biggest house with all the bells and whistles don’t mean anything .. unless you have your health and those you love to spend your life with.
