This morning I posted a great Soap Nuts deal on Ethical Deal – what’s more, I’m a geek and have been so oober excited ALL MORNING. I mean, Soap Nuts totally made my day. I washed Dave’s jeans last night with them – because I ran out of my regular home made detergent.
I forgot that I had gotten Soap Nuts around Thanksgiving for next to nothing. So I tossed them in the wash. This morning (hee hee) I was hopping in the shower & yelled “DAVID! – TOSS THE CLOTHES In the DRYER”. So (unwillingly) he did.. he was ticked, he hates doing laundry, I won’t lie. He comes in the bathroom while I’m in the shower & goes “what the heck are these acorns doing in the washer? Where did Rylan get these?”
I was a little irritated… because I told him about these back in November.. (shows how much he listens, right? Typical.) Anyways, tried to explain to him today what they are… and he was just like “whatever, I don’t care about acorn things, use what you want.” Ok – fine, I will.
Soap Nuts are a totally dried fruit with natural cleaning properties. You can use them to clean your laundry. Weird… but true. They are not a nut – honestly not at all. They are the fruit of a tree found mostly in the Himalayas…… and an excellent alternative to regular detergent & cleansers.
We make our own detergent – and so Soap Nuts are really quite similar in that they are more of an alternative. They are 100% natural, and they are organically grown – free of harsh chemicals and very very gentle. Great for those of you with Eczema, or Psoriasis, great for babies, perfect for septic systems.
They are biodegradable – and also low-sudsing, so they CAN be used in HE systems. The outer shell of Soap Nuts holds “saponin” – a natural substance known for it’s ability to cleanse & wash items.
They’re new to the American culture… Which is why you haven’t heard of them too much. Using them goes something like this:
- You put 3-5 little Acorn-looking nuts in your little cotton drawstring bag – which comes with an order of Soap Nuts
- Pull the top closed, add any essential oil (3-5 drops) on the outside of the bag (I use Cotton Essential Oil)
- Put it in the washer, in the actual DRUM, not the drawer! Wash clothes on warm or hot.
Then you remove the bag before your clothes go in the dryer. You can re-use the Soap Nuts again – and if you don’t have any more loads to do, just set them to the side, let them dry, and then use on your next load.
If for whatever reason you’re like me, and you just pull clothes out and transfer to the dryer, it’s ok if the Soap Nuts get dried.. no big deal. Just use them in the next wash cycle again. After 3-5 uses, the Soap Nuts are ready to be… composted. You can toss them in your compost pile and start with 3-5 new Soap Nuts.
One bag of Soap Nuts ($30) is equivalent to 300-400 loads of laundry – they have Soap Nuts for $10 a bag as well – After voucher, pay just $20 for up to 600 loads of laundry soap – which is $0.03/load.
