This is something I posted a few years ago (believe it or not – time flies!) – back in 2010! Can you believe that? How fast time goes!
Today was Wendy’s First Day of Kinder – and with that, many of you may already know that we are moving about 25 minutes south of where we are. We are not in the new house yet for another 2 weeks, but regardless, we have to drive Wendy about 30 minutes to school each day until then – so today I hauled the kids to Queen Creek super early for her to be in school at 7:30. Yikes!
We tried getting as much ready last night as we could – which included doing ‘hairstyles’. One easy and quick way we adapt in our home is with the sock bun – and it has been 2 years since I last posted this, so I’m going to give it a shot again today.
Those of you who know me know that my hair is very, very long – as is my daughters. It takes considerable time in the summer when I’m trying to get kids ready and out the door, so this is my solution to no-fuss hair.
I have had a lot of people ask me to show them how I do my hair. Of course I can’t take pictures behind my head, so I used my daughter as my “model”. Here we go!
You will need the following:
1. Big Black Tube Sock (or any long tube sock)
2. Two elastic ties
3. Two hair scrunchies (or 1, depending on how thick or long your hair is)
You start by cutting the “toe” off your long tube sock – I use our old black military socks – they work great, and since we are wearing green socks now, I don’t feel bad cutting the toe off ;) Once you cut the toe off, roll the sock up like a donut .
Put your hair in a low ponytail. Either right in the back of your head, or on the side, or whatever. You can even be creative and put it up high.
Then, spread your hair around the donut, so that the donut is covered by your hair all the way around. Use the elastic to put around the donut, securing your hair. You will have scraggles sticking out, it’s Ok!
Take the “excess” hair, and form it around the donut, and then throw a scrunchy over it. You may need two. Tuck any loose ends under the scrunchy… and you’re good to go!
Easy, pain-free way of putting their up, in a hurry, when you have little time and kids who are not early risers!
My daughter was 3 in the pictures above – her hair is about twice as long now.. so we need many scrunchies to make this work.

I saw that on Pinterest not too long ago. I have blonde hair, so I used a light sock. It worked great, but it’s better if you have lots of thick hair (which I don’t). The girl on there had a way of just twisting the sock up with the hair and being able to just hold by itself! It made no sense to me, I looked over and over, but…again, I’m blonde. Anyway, she’s on youtube if you want to see how she does it without the pins and such. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I13J7ArHTkM

No need for pins! I dont use pins either. I have done this since 1997 when I was active duty army – works great!

Hey, it’s me again. I figured you’d read this ;) So I figured out how to do it like that strange girl on youtube and did it to my daughter’s blonde hair too. If you just twist the pony tail a bit around the sock starting from the bottom, then kinda roll it up on itslef and tug as you go, you only need the sock to hold it, nothing else, not even a scrunchie! And if you do that when hair is a bit damp, it gives super cute curls too. Anyway, hope I’m not bugging you, just seems even quicker than using scrunchies :)
