I know that this is somewhat off an odd post…..but it’s one that I’m sure you can relate to.
I spent the morning catching up on making some meals ahead of time for this week.. .and in the midst of it all, the kitchen needed to be cleaned as well.
I have so many kitchen sponges hanging around, that needed to be cleaned.. so I tossed them in the wash with all the towels – my mother in law was a bit speechless…… (ha!) – I said “It’s ok Grandma.. have to wash them they are dirty”.
So I thought it would be neat to do a post on some innovative ways to clean your most popular kitchen cleaning item.
::: Throw it in the washer with your towels and air dry
::: Bleach – you want to use only 10% bleach to 90% water. Soak for 10-15 minutes and wring out….. then air dry.
::: Boil in Water for 5 minutes – cool, and wring out water and let air dry (most effective)
::: Wash in the dishwasher – top rack. I do this fairly often myself if I don’t use the washer. The hot water expels the bacteria. Make sure you air dry after wringing out.
The main train of thought in keeping your sponge as clean as possible is to keep it DRY.
After you use it, wring it out… make sure you put it in a place that can dry. Bacteria thrives on moist surfaces, and can only live for a very short period of time on dry surfaces. Make sure you sanitize them every 2-3 days.. get in the habit of throwing it in the dishwasher when you wash your dishes.

I might try the dishwasher, but my dishwasher won’t clean dishes, not sure I can trust it with a sponge LOL Will probably stick with the washing machine for my kitchen laundry.
