This week I got a wild bug to clean my oven. Because I use it to bake everything from chicken to cookies, almost daily, it gets dirty quickly. No matter how cautious I am, things spill, they burn up, and, it smell.
I refuse to pay for the oven cleaner in a can.. the thought of using that in something I bake with worries me. Baking Soda is such a universal item in our household, mixed with Dawn I knew that only GOOD things would happen.
I removed the racks, and whipped up a paste that worked like a charm… so well in fact I figured I’d share.
- 1 & 1/2 C. Baking Soda
- 1/2 C. Dawn Blue Dish Soap
- 1/4 C. Vinegar
Get ready to clean your oven:
- Remove your Racks, set them aside.
- Make sure your oven is OFF.
- Mix the ingredients above, into a thick paste.
- Paint that thick paste mixture in the oven – I focused on the BOTTOM since that is where ALL of my bad stuff was.
- Let it sit … I let mine sit 2 days. (I forgot…… I really did. You probably won’t forget – but I used my crock pot the next day so I completely forgot I had white stuff in my oven… until I went to make Lasagna and opened my oven door and surprised myself)… longer is always good – it gives it time to work.
- After 8-12 hours, open the oven door, take a WET wash rag and gently wipe it all out.
- You’ll probably need to wring out that wash rag and re-wipe until it’s ALL out. I had to wring out the wash rag about 8 times over.
- Then spray some vinegar in the oven, and wipe the rest of the remaining residue out.
Depending on how bad your oven is… you shouldn’t need to scrub. I did absolutely NO scrubbing. I do have a minor few ‘hard spots’ left, but nothing really serious.

I did my oven with this the last time you posted and it worked GREAT! I guess I should clean mine again since I have tons of baking and cooking to do, thanks for the reminder Sheryl.
