Halls and Ludens are popular drops you can buy in store – I’m sure at one time or another you have made that purchase, as have many other Americans.
Normally buying these packaged drops in store will lend you to finding them normally full of high fructose corn syrup – not something that is great for anyone.
With almost every packaged food having HFCS now, that in itself should be plenty of reason to try to make your own items at home. The health benefits of eating better and supporting a different chain are tremendous.
These Soothing Essential Oil Drops are so easy to make and great for throats!
Ingredients:
- 1 c. Raw Unfiltered Honey (local is always best)
- 1 tsp Ghee or Coconut Oil
- 8 drops Thieves Vitality Essential Oil
- 4 drops Lemon Vitality Essential Oil
- 1 Candy Thermometer (we used THIS from Amazon)
- Silicone Mold (we used the heart one above, which was the perfect size)
To Make:
- Put the Honey in a saucepan and bring it to 300 degrees on medium. It will bubble and rise up – so make sure you continue to stir. The ghee should help keep the frothing / bubbling down.. but Honey does burn quickly and easily so make sure you are there to constantly stir!
- Make sure your mixture hits 300 degrees or they will not harden!
- Once at 300 degrees, remove from the heat and stir so it will begin to cool – wait until it is as cool as possible then add the essential oils.
- Spoon into a silicone mold, make sure you have set the molds on parchment paper (as it will get sticky!)
- Allow to cool completely and then store in the fridge or freezer – especially if you are in a warm weather climate. Although you are heating up the Honey to 300, they will become soft if left out in warmer temps.
- You can opt to add 1-2 Tbsp of Powdered Sugar in a zipper bag or glass jar and coat them with a light dusting of powdered sugar before wrapping in parchment paper.
We are aware that boiling raw honey will indeed take away some of the health properties – in the end, they are still a better alternative to high fructose corn syrup.
If you really are concerned about keeping the properties and nutritional value of raw honey, you may want to consider a syrup (see our last post HERE for Immune Boosting Syrup).
