Have a ton of Potatoes? We were at the Ranch Market last week and scored a 15 pound bag for $.99.
I thought that was a great deal – I’m kind of picky on potatoes, I usually don’t buy them unless they are Earthbound Farms variety. But lately I have not seen them at Walmart, and we needed a bag so in the cart they went.
However… we had a sudden death in the family this weekend and as we prepare to go out of town very soon, I wanted to use all this produce we just picked up so it didn’t go bad while we were gone.
So I knew that had to happen today, and that meant finding room in the freezer for Hashbrown Potatoes. By far the EASIEST way to use up that bag, so they don’t go bad, so you can eat them later on.
Compared to the cost of buying Potatoes in a box, this is really a sweet deal – $.99 got me that 15 pound bag, while you would pay $.99 for a SMALL box, with potatoes and lots of other things you probably don’t need in your potatoes.
Right?
It would have taken me the same amount of time to drive 4 kids to the store to get the kind on the shelf. Not to mention I just thought this was a better deal. HUGE Bag, versus TINY box? Easy choice.
The easiest way to use all those potatoes is to prepare your potatoes to make hash browns and toss in the freezer.
How to Make your Own Frozen Hashbrown Potatoes:
Wash up your potatoes and prick them a few times with a fork.
Throw them in the oven for 1 – 1 1/2 hours at 350 – until they are baked.
Take out, let them cool. Remove the skins.
Take out a few plates, and clear your counter.
Shred the potatoes on your grater.
Freeze up in bags in your freezer.
That’s it! We love our hashbrowns with a LOT of butter, and some salt – they’ll cook up much easier if you bake your potatoes first. Aside from the time it took to bake the potatoes, the rest was relatively easy – so easy in fact my 8 year old did all the grating, put all the hashbrowns in a freezer bag, and packed it away in the freezer.
She even cleaned up the kitchen when she was done – amazing stuff!
