Many of us are fortunate to live in Arizona – and score very inexpensive milk almost weekly.
While other areas of the country pay upwards of $4 – $5 per gallon, we can usually get away with paying $2 or less – which is an unbelievable price.
One way to save money the weeks that milk is not on sale is to freeze gallons – there are a few steps you can take to do this.. you’ll find that not only does the milk thaw out just fine, it’ll save you from paying the non-sales price in a pinch. I have 3 gallons of milk in my chest freezer right now..
Leave room for the milk to expand. Pour out 1/2 – 1 cup of milk to leave a few inches of space – milk expands.. so you need to give it room to do so.
Date the container. Take a permanent marker and label your milk container with the date – and, the number of days remaining before it expires (if your milk was purchased on 9/1 & the expiration was 9/14, and you freeze it on 9/5, write “Frozen – 9/5. Expires 9/14.”
Put the milk in the freezer. It’ll take up to 24 hours to freeze… I usually set mine upright. If you don’t have space for the gallons, break down into smaller containers.
Store it for No More than 6-8 Weeks. I would not recommend leaving it in there more than 2 months – it may also inherit the flavors/odors of other items so make sure your other items have a lid or are in a container.
Thaw it in the Fridge. This will take 1-3 days to thaw – you should never leave it on the counter directly – If you need it quicker, use a sink full of cold water – it may take a few hours versus 1-3 days.
Once thawed, use in 5-7 days. Shake up the gallon a bit if need be.
You can also freeze smaller portions in an ice cube tray, too… pop out and put in a Hefty OneZip.
