We are in week 3 of our 52 Week Savings Challenge – you can read how it works by heading to our last post – and download the chart HERE to save with us for a period of 52 FULL weeks.
We are going to check in with you weekly to see how you are making progress, and we hope that you follow along with us to make this commitment for your family just like we are.
We’ve been tracking our progress with you in hopes that you will be inspired to put away too. Since we are early in the plan, the weekly required amounts are MINIMAL – this week we need to put away $3.00!
That is TOTALLY doable! If you CAN’T put away $3.00 then you probably need to re-evaluate those unnecessary purchases you are making this week (INCLUDING Christmas gifts!)
Our Progress Thus Far:
Week 1, Put away $1.00 – We put away $7.00 – I got lucky, and found $7 in the dresser drawer – I’m almost certain it’s David’s, and guess what? He hasn’t asked or realized it is gone so it’s now in our Piggy.
Week 2, Put away $2.00 – I was fortunate this week to find $4.00 in the Console in the GMC when I took the kids to school this morning.. as I was digging around last minute for a PEN to sign their homework because we were almost late to school, I thought YES! At least something is in my favor today!
Our FIRST instinct was to drive on down to Sonic to get a drink for $.99 (through 10 a.m.) … but I resisted the urge, threw the $4.00 in my purse pocket and it’s now in the envelope to go in the Piggy.
Week 3 – (THIS WEEK), Put away $3.00. I know I could have gotten by with ONLY $3.00 but I really wanted to do MORE than that.
We received our renewal for our auto insurance this week and our Geico Policy had gone up $500 – for the SAME 5 vehicles we had been insuring for the last few years. With no reason as to why except (per the rep) “It’s where you live”, I called up USAA, received a quote/estimate that was almost $700 LESS per 6 month period and within 1 hour, we were were with them.
Since we had paid Geico for the 6 month term in full a few days prior (we prefer to pay in full versus monthly), they prorated the policy and refunded our payment with an additional $51.00 to us in the form of a check.
Although I could have spent that on Christmas items, we did not – there isn’t anything we NEED or want, except to put that money away.
BONUS? I found $1.00 on the kitchen counter today – unclaimed. Since someone left it there, it’s now mine, and an extra $1 bonus for the account – so this week we put away $52 (that would have been normally just thrown in the bank account!)
This Savings Challenge is so incredibly easy to do – make it a commitment! We know it’s Christmas – but remember that if your focus is on the gifts and not on YOURSELF, then you might need to sit and reevaluate your focus.
Although it does require a physical action (taking that cash and putting it IN the bank!) … going through the motions is more of an EMOTIONAL commitment.
