Kefir smoothies are something we enjoy daily in our house. .. our older 2 kids just as much as us.
If you aren’t familiar with Kefir, it’s 1000 times better than yogurt – while yogurt can have 5-7 strains of beneficial bacteria, kefir can have over 50. It’s great if you are working to improve your gut health… it has worked well for my husband and been probably the best thing for him to help repair his gut after the damaging effects of a myriad of prescriptions a few years ago.
Kefir is drinkable, and is pretty tart. My older two kids like kefir strawberry smoothies, while my husband prefers his with a mix of mangos, pineapple and strawberries. It’s easier for us to make it into smoothies, and since mornings are kind of crazy around here, we usually do them at night after dinner.
We picked up our raw milk kefir grains at a local farm 9 months ago – we soak them daily in raw milk and they grow, and grow, and grow. I am passionate about the benefits of raw milk and every week I make a milk run to the farm to pick up 9 gallons for 2 friends including our own family.
Making Kefir is so easy -and it’s great for you. Making your own is so much better than purchasing in store, too.
The amount of honey varies – if you like your kefir with more tartness then lay off the honey. Or if you like yours more sweet, using more is fine too.
